Asbestos disease campaigner & fundraiser Mavis Nye has finally lost her battle with Mesothelioma. Such sad news

It's with a heavy heart that we share the news that legendary asbestos disease campaigner and fundraiser Mavis Nye has finally lost her battle with Mesothelioma.

Mavis contracted Mesothelioma in 2009 and, together with her husband Ray, they have raised £1000s for asbestos disease research since her diagnosis as well as supporting fellow sufferers of the disease and being a figurehead for the asbestos industry as a whole.

Our Alpha Tracker director Robin is a Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation and was devastated to hear of Mavis's passing.  Robin will be taking an oil portrait of Mavis & Nye to the European Asbestos Forum in Brussels to help the attendees from 27 different countries celebrate Mavis and her incredible achievements.

Ray & Mavis Nye

Rest in peace, Mavis, your work is done.

Robin's first meeting as Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation

We love Mavis.  The asbestos industry loves Mavis!

Mavis Nye's work to highlight the danger of asbestos and to help patients suffering from asbestos-related disease is legendary.  Our director Robin was honoured when asked to be a Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation and has just attended his first Trustee meeting.

Dr Mavis Nye is voted SHP's Most Influential Figure in Health & Safety for 2021

We've sent our heartfelt congratulations to our new friend Dr Mavis Nye for winning SHP's ballot for the "Most Influential Figure in Health & Safety" in 2021.

Congrats Mavis - you even beat Prof Chris Whitty to the title!

SHP's citation says:

"Mavis has been described as a ‘tour de force, and an absolute dynamo for Asbestos Awareness’. She lives with Mesothelioma every day of her life, having been diagnosed with Mesothelioma in 2009.

It was during her treatment, that she decided early on that something needed to be done. Today, she spends her life campaigning for asbestos awareness and removal and her work is internationally recognised. Supported by many influential people, she is in demand for presentations to spread the word."

Here at Start Software, we are working with the Mavis Nye Foundation to find ways that we can support their work.  Our asbestos software, Alpha Tracker, has been used to survey more than 5.5 million buildings (we believe this is the biggest asbestos database in the world).  We want to use our experience to support the work that Mavis and her team does in the fight against asbestos-related disease.

We took the portrait of Mavis & Ray Nye to the Houses of Parliament to mark the anniversary of her passing. It was a memorable day

Yesterday marked exactly 12 months since we lost our beloved Mavis Nye to mesothelioma.  Mavis was a legend in the world of asbestos, surviving an incredible 14 years after she was diagnosed in 2009.  Her fundraising, campaigning, and support for other sufferers of asbestos-related disease were an inspiration to all.

To mark the date, our Alpha Tracker director Robin organised an event at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by Julia Buckley MP and with most of the asbestos industry represented.  Robin is a Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation, the charity founded by Mavis & Ray to inspire and support other sufferers of mesothelioma and to raise funds for research.

It was a lovely occasion.  Moving, inspiring, and important, raising the levels of awareness with MPs and demanding action.  The whole event was linked back to the wonderful oil painting of Mavis & Ray which was the brainchild of European Asbestos Forum President Yvonne Waterman and commissioned by UKNAR founder Andrew Paten.  The portrait only arrived a few days before the event thanks to the efforts of Harry Vonk from the Asbestos Museum (where it has been on display for the last 12 months).

Mavis wanted her portrait to be in the Houses of Parliament so that MPs would ask who she was, understand her story, and then take action to stop people from being exposed to asbestos fibres in the future.  In particular, she was determined to see changes in policy and legislation so that asbestos was removed entirely from schools and hospitals.  She was also a great supporter of the notion of a UK National Asbestos Register.

Here are some of the photos from the day and a video of the event itself in a room just off Westminster Hall.

Ray couldn't join the event in person as he is not well enough to travel, but it was videoed to enable him to watch it back at home.

A long lunch with old friend and asbestos compaigner, Ray Nye

Today was one of those visits that reminds you what really matters.

Me (Robin), Kirsty, Ray and Andrew

I popped in to see Ray Nye, the husband of the much-missed and much-loved Mavis Nye, along with regular visitor Kirsty Budenbender from DSK and Andrew Paten from UKNAR. What was meant to be a catch-up turned into a proper natter, plenty of laughter, and the sort of easy conversation that only happens when people genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

Ray was on fine form.

There’s something wonderfully grounding about spending time with someone who has seen so much, done so much, and yet still carries warmth and humour so lightly. We talked about work, about people we know, about life generally, about Bristol Zoo, and about Ray's new hobby, Mahjong! It was not solemn. It was not formal. It was simply good company.

Remembering Mavis, Naturally

Of course, whenever Ray is in the room, Mavis is never far from the conversation.

Not in a heavy way. Not in a sombre way. Just as part of the fabric of things.

Mavis Nye did extraordinary work as an asbestos awareness campaigner. After being diagnosed with mesothelioma, she turned what would have crushed many people into a platform for action. She campaigned tirelessly for better awareness, stronger regulation, and justice for those affected by asbestos exposure. She helped give a voice to people who often felt unheard.

And she did it with courage, humour, and determination.

The funny thing is, when you’re sitting in Ray’s living room laughing about everyday things, you’re reminded that behind every campaign, every headline, every policy discussion, there are real people. Real families. Real lives.

That’s easy to forget when we are buried in paperwork, compliance documents, or technical guidance.

Why It Still Matters

Asbestos is not history. It is not something we can neatly file away under “industrial past”.

It is still present in thousands of buildings across the UK. It still poses risks. It still affects families. The work that organisations like DSK and UKNAR are doing remains important because awareness, management, and responsibility are ongoing duties, not one-off exercises.  It's the reason we created asbestos software Alpha Tracker here at Start Software.

But today was not about reports or regulations.

It was about connection.

It was about remembering that behind every awareness campaign is a human story. Behind every safety protocol is someone’s parent, partner, or friend.

And it was about laughter.

Because if Mavis taught us anything, it was that strength and humour are not opposites. They sit very comfortably together.

The Best Kind of Catch Up

We left having laughed a lot, put the world to rights in a modest sort of way, and reminded ourselves why the work around asbestos awareness still matters.

Not because it is dramatic.

Not because it is political.

But because it is personal.

And sometimes the most meaningful moments are simply a handful of people in a warm room, sharing stories, remembering someone remarkable, and carrying on the work in their own way.

Thank you, Ray, for the welcome, the stories, and the laughs.

We’ll be back for another cup of tea and Kirsty's sandwiches soon.

"The ongoing threat of Asbestos in the UK" - do join Robin and leading asbestos speakers on the Ethex webinar

Our director Robin has been invited to be a panellist on a forthcoming webinar, "The ongoing threat of Asbestos in the UK".  The webinar is being hosted by Ethex on Thursday 18 November at 4pm.

Alongside Robin are some of the leading asbestos authorities in the UK.

Dr Mavis Nye

Dr Mavis Nye is the CEO and founder of the Mavis Nye Foundation.  Hers is an incredible story of diagnosis with mesothelioma, a shocking prognosis then chemotherapy and then participation in clinical drugs trials.  Throughout all of this, Mavis has been one of the most prominent campaigners and speakers on asbestos illness in the UK and her contribution to the cause is now internationally recognised.

Liz Darlison MBE

Liz Darlison is the CEO of fundraising and campaigning charity Mesothelioma UK. Liz's career in nursing and as a clinical cancer specialist gives her a lifetime of knowledge and experience in caring for and treating patients with mesothelioma.  Her contribution to the cause was recognised in 2019 when she was awarded an MBE for services to cancer research and patient care.

Andrew Paten

Alongside Robin, Mavis & Liz will be Andrew Paten, co-founder of the UK National Asbestos Register (UKNAR), a social enterprise with a mission to make asbestos registers more available to the people that need to access them.  Technology is key, here, and Andrew & Robin will be highlighting plans to use technology in innovative ways to protect people from unnecessary and potentially deadly exposure to asbestos fibres.

Robin Bennett

Robin is a director of Start Software in the UK and Alpha Tracker Pty in Australia; both companies design, build, promote and support the Alpha Tracker asbestos software system.  Used by asbestos consultancies to locate and analyse asbestos materials, and building owners to manage their asbestos problem, Alpha Tracker has been used to record more than 50 million items of asbestos data in 4 million buildings worldwide.

Asbestonomy conference over for 2022. Bring on 2023!

We have just spent a couple of days in London at Asbestonomy 2022.

This international asbestos conference gave us an opportunity to listen to amazing speakers, talk to clients, talk to competitors and meet some wonderful people who are all working together to solve the asbestos problem - once, and for all.

Some of the people we want to highlight (and who we are working with us here at Alpha Tracker) are:
Here are some of the photos I took at the event:

Robin, Dr Yvonne Waterman and Andrew Paten

The conference reinforced what an important industry this is.  So many stories of disease, suffering and, tragically, premature death.  It's vital that we all work together to sort this problem out.

We introduced a new industry-wide initiative called OpenAsbestos, which aims to provide an open, industry-wide framework for the sharing of asbestos data.  This supports the UKNAR initiative to develop a UK-wide national asbestos register but also goes much further - enabling all systems and organisations with an interest in asbestos to access data easily wherever it is stored.

If you'd like to know more about OpenAsbestos, please do get in touch with Robin directly.

The inspirational Mavis & Ray Nye presented with a stunning oil portrait in recognition of their tireless work

The incredible and inspirational asbestos diseases campaigners Mavis & Ray Nye have been presented with an oil portrait painting as a thank you from the entire asbestos industry.

Ray & Mavis

Two industry leaders, Andrew Paten (UKNAR) and Colette Willoughby (NORAC), made the presentation on behalf of the industry to Mavis & Ray at their Kent home.

The painting is a gift to the Mavis Nye Foundation which raises awareness, funds and provides support to victims of asbestos disease Mesothelioma.  Our Alpha Tracker director Robin is a Trustee of the Foundation and said "We are thrilled to receive the painting from the asbestos industry in recognition of the tireless and selfless work undertaken by Mavis & Ray since their diagnoses.  We will treasure the painting and ensure that as many people as possible see and appreciate it".

Robin meets Dr Terri-Ann Berry and Leonie Metcalfe of the Mesothelioma Support & Asbestos Awareness Trust

Inspirational asbestos disease campaigner Mavis Nye has friends, contacts and influence all around the world.

Mavis asked Robin (he's a Trustee of her Foundation) to look out for New Zealand mesothelioma campaigners Dr Terri-Ann Berry and Leonie Metcalfe of the Mesothelioma Support & Asbestos Awareness Trust whilst he was at the Auckland FAMANZ conference.

Not only did meet up with them - they gave him t-shirts and chocolates to take back to Mavis!

Alpha Tracker at EAF 2023! We've thoroughly enjoyed the European Asbestos Forum conference and exploring the host city, Brussels

Alpha Tracker has been on the road this week, exhibiting at the European Asbestos Forum 2023 in Brussels, Belgium.

We've been meeting clients, talking to asbestos consultancies from Europe and beyond and listening to fascinating presentations from mesothelioma survivors and worldwide asbestos experts.

Some of the EAF 2023 highlights for the Alpha Tracker team

In addition, the conference organiser and host, EAF President Dr Yvonne Waterman, delivered a moving tribute to asbestos campaigner Mavis Nye in her opening remarks.  Mavis recently passed away after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma in 2009 and her portrait took pride of place on the conference stage.

After the conference, the portrait is heading to the Asbestos Museum in Rotterdam to be placed on display.  Mavis visited the museum last year and it made a huge impression on her and Ray.

Mavis & Ray are on the road again - this time at the BOHS/FAAM conference in Birmingham

It's a joy to share the portrait of asbestos campaigners Mavis & Ray Nye at conferences and other events.  Our director Robin is a Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation and has taken the painting - carefully wrapped! - on the train to a conference today.

Under wraps at Shrewsbury Railway Station

Today's trip has seen the painting arrive at the BOHS/FAAM asbestos conference at the Birmingham Events & Conference Centre.  What an excellent event - full of asbestos software Alpha Tracker clients and old industry friends such as UKNAR.

The portrait arrived safely and is generating a lot of interest and compliments.  It's a great tribute to the tireless fundraising and campaigning work that Mavis & Ray have undertaken over the years.

Asbestos round-table meeting in London today - we're helping to move agenda forward to make the UK asbestos-safe

Sir Stephen Timms MP joined our director Robin along with asbestos industry friends and colleagues today at a round-table meeting to discuss asbestos management in the UK.

Chaired by ResPublica, and inspired by asbestos campaigners Charles Pickles, Mavis Nye and Liz Darlison, the meeting discussed the Select Committee report, the Government's response to it, and what should be done next.

Our asbestos software Alpha Tracker holds asbestos information about millions of buildings in the UK and we'll be using all of this data to help provide the evidence needed to convince Government to change the way that asbestos is managed.  Our OpenAsbestos initiative was also mentioned as it will help to support the UKNAR proposals to make a national asbestos database a reality.

Meetings like this are sometimes a bit of a challenge, but this was a joy, with the icing on the cake being a hug from Mavis, too!

There was even time for some sightseeing on the way back to the train.

The Mavis & Ray portrait continues its road trip! It's been collected from UKATA and is now at Alpha Tracker HQ

Director Robin visited the Contamination Expo at the NEC yesterday to collect the wonderful portrait of asbestos campaigners Mavis & Ray Nye and to bring the painting back to Alpha Tracker HQ in Telford for viewing.

Robin is a Trustee of the Mavis Nye Foundation (MNF) and formally received the painting from asbestos campaigner and European Asbestos Forum founder Dr Yvonne Waterman.  The team at UKATA have been looking after the portrait at their HQ for a couple of weeks and so it was convenient to collect it from their stand at the NEC.

Yvonne with Liam Pembleton (UKATA) and Robin Bennett (MNF/Alpha Tracker)

It was a stressful move! Carrying the portrait through the NEC and then giving it to Dan to bring back in his car was not easy and Robin was mightily glad to see it in the Alpha Tracker reception area in one piece!

That's a wrap! The European Asbestos Forum 2022 is over - what an incredible event and a force for good

The energy, focus, expertise and optimism shown by the speakers and delegates at the European Asbestos Forum in Amsterdam were incredible.  What an event, what a success, and huge congratulations to the event organiser and EAF President Dr Yvonne Waterman for bringing it all together.

The event was so positive!  Every presentation, every delegate and every conversation related to improving standards and increasing collaboration.  What a joy to have so many optimistic people in one room.

Alpha Tracker was an event sponsor and our director Robin was a speaker, talking about OpenAsbestos and the positive impact the initiative could make in the asbestos industry.

Many of the Alpha Tracker asbestos software development team also attended the conference, making contacts, discussing ideas with delegates, and learning about the direction that asbestos regulation is taking across Europe and beyond.

From the Palace of Westminster to Mesothelioma UK's HQ - the portrait of Mavis & Ray Nye is on the move again

Our Alpha Tracker director Robin and UKNAR's Andrew Paten were on the road on Thursday moving the beautiful portrait painting of asbestos campaigners Mavis & Ray Nye.

For the last few months, it has been hanging in the Palace of Westminster, in Sir Stephen Timms' office.  Sir Stephen has taken an active interest in asbestos policy in the UK since become the Chairman of the Work & Pension Committee in the previous government.

The portrait of Mavis & Ray with Sir Stephen

The next location is going to be Mesothelioma UK's Loughborough's HQ so we had to start the process of moving the picture from London to the Midlands.

Andrew & Robin boxed it up, took it out of Portcullis House, then headed off.

... perhaps a bus?

It had to be a Tube!

The painting is now waiting in a safe London space waiting for the courier to collect and deliver to Meso UK to be proudly displayed and seen by many more asbestos campaigners and nurses.

Mavis & Ray's time in Westminster is up - where next for their wonderful portrait?

The beautiful portrait of beloved asbestos campaigners Mavis & Ray Nye has been hanging in the parlimentary office of Sir Stephen Timms.

Ray, Mavis & Sir Stephen Timms

We're so grateful to Sir Stephen and Julia Buckley MP (Alpha Tracker director Robin's local Member of Parliament) for helping us to achieve Mavis's goal - to get her picture in parliament so that her story could be told and heard by the UK's asbestos policy makers.

The big question is... where should the portrait head next?  It has been to many events and many countries - but where do you think it should be displayed when we collect it from the Houses of Parliament?  Please do get in touch with Robin with your ideas.
