About Start Software

Start Software is an award-winning developer and leading publisher of asbestos software, systems for the legal services industry and more.

Want to know more about asbestos software Alpha Tracker? Alpha Tracker is the most used asbestos software in the UK, Australia & New Zealand with more than 60m items of asbestos data stored.

Our legal services software Alpha Legal helps will writers, accountants, solicitors, IFAs and estate agents to communicate securely with clients. Read about developments here on the blog.

Or need help with Alpha Anywhere or Alpha Transform projects or software development? You'll find useful info here.

What's new in Alpha Tracker Release 42? Is it the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything?

42 is famously the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.  Take a look at The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy if you don't know the reference!

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was a work of genius

Alpha Tracker Release 42 is not quite that, but it is still a huge update, with the usual hundreds of improvements, new features, performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Important! It will probably also be the final major update to the core Alpha Tracker system before we begin rolling out our complete rewrite, built using a new technology stack, later in 2026. You can read more about our plans on the Alpha Tracker roadmap.

Jack, Ferry, Judy, Kim and the rest of the team have had a lot of fun creating this release. As always, we have also worked hard to implement ideas and suggestions from our wonderful customers.

Release 42 highlights

  • More than 600 improvements and updates across every area of Alpha Tracker

  • Major Water Hygiene enhancements, including clearer risk logic to improve how water risks are presented on the Client Portal

  • A new LRA Review water project type, making it easier to revisit, review and update information from previous Legionella Risk Assessments

  • Instant AI analysis of survey items from photographs, helping surveyors assess materials more quickly and consistently

  • Further support for Australian asbestos material assessment scoring, helping asbestos teams work in line with updated Australian requirements

  • A new Report Dashboard on the Home screen, giving teams a clearer overview of report production across their projects

  • Improved Alpha Tracker performance, thanks to an updated version of the underlying software framework

  • Faster imports using the Alpha Tracker Work Queue, improving the speed of some of our most popular data imports

  • Improved site-sharing visibility, making it clearer which sites have been shared and helping teams manage access more confidently

  • Enhanced site register controls, including a new hidden-items tab and site-level QR-code password protection for greater control over site information

Update on the new software framework

We have received a small number of reports of instability following the framework update. As of 25 July 2026, we believe we have identified and fixed the issue, and deployment of the fix to affected systems is under way.

Learning, Connecting, Inventing: Start Software at World Summit AI 2025, Amsterdam

4,000 chairs ready to be filled (and 8,632 people actually attended!)

Learning, Connecting, Inventing: Start Software at World Summit AI 2025, Amsterdam

The Start Software team headed to Amsterdam for this year’s World Summit AI — two days of ideas, debate, and discovery. We went to learn, connect and invent, and we came back with new insights, connections, and practical takeaways to improve how our products work for real people. From agentic AI and human-in-the-loop design to transparency and security, the themes map directly onto what we build every day in Alpha Tracker, Alpha Legal, ecoScribe and roadvlog. Our goal is simple: use AI to amplify creativity and productivity while keeping people firmly in control.

Two special people joined our group. Legacy Software Manager Mickey from our partner CTT Group, and Start's remote developer Fatbardh — our first chance to meet Fatbardh in person. Trips like this deepen partnerships and help us align product roadmaps with the challenges our clients are facing right now.

Early Starts, Big Ideas: Why Human Focus Still Wins

Jack & Catherine walking into the venue

There’s something about starting early in a new city — daybreak walks through Amsterdam’s quiet streets before the day’s ideas and conversations begin. The energy built fast as we joined 8,000+ attendees focused on where AI is heading next. For us, “next” isn’t abstract: it means better data quality checks in Alpha Tracker, more secure document workflows in Alpha Legal, and AI-assisted writing that saves ecologists hours in ecoScribe. Early starts, big ideas — and a constant focus on the humans who rely on our software every day.

“It’s All About Time”: Productivity with Guardrails

The message was clear - AI should be used to amplify creavity and make the most of our time

One of the standout keynote messages was time — how AI changes the way we use it, save it, and sometimes waste it. We’re doubling down on features that give time back to users: AlphaValidator (and our newly-previewed AI tools) in Alpha Tracker catches issues before reports go out; Ask Alfie helps users find answers instantly; and FLS-powered scheduling reduces planning friction. In Alpha Legal, digital signatures and client document workflows cut days from onboarding, while ecoScribe speeds up report writing without sacrificing accuracy. Productivity matters — but only with strong guardrails for quality and compliance.

The Vibe: Agentic AI, Security and Human-in-the-Loop

Lucas, Melika & Jack at an Agentic AI booth - a theme of the event

Every booth buzzed with conversation about AI agents and safe autonomy. Our takeaway is pragmatic: agentic workflows shine when they are operator-controlled and auditable. That’s how we approach automation in Alpha Tracker — giving teams tools to triage data, draft outputs and flag anomalies while a human makes the final call. It’s also front-of-mind for Alpha Legal, where trust and traceability are essential. Agentic AI is exciting… and even better when it respects human expertise.

Teamwork and Collaboration with Partners

Start Software are an AWS partner - so we borrowed their both for the group photo!

We made time to connect with partners like AWS, exploring new AI services and how they can bolster resilience, performance and security in our stacks. Cloud choices matter when you’re processing sensitive reports or legal documents at scale; our partnership work helps keep Alpha Tracker and Alpha Legal fast and dependable. Huge thanks to Kim and Adam for support from the UK — teamwork that kept everything running smoothly while we were away.

“Seeing how others weave AI into live business systems — not just labs — pushes our thinking forward. Our challenge now is translating that into wins for our clients.”
Robin

It’s About Time… and Team Spirit

It's about time - and interesting cars!

A DeLorean time machine made the point with a wink: great tools give you time back. That’s the bar we set for our roadmap — features that shorten cycle times, reduce rework and make expertise travel further. Whether it’s smarter scheduling in Alpha Tracker, friction-free document approvals in Alpha Legal or AI-generated structure in ecoScribe, we measure success by the hours our users get back for higher-value work.

Human in the Loop: Support That Never Sleeps

Our 24x7 Support didn't stop just because we were away

Even while at the conference, real-world teamwork continued. Zac, Dan, and Jack handled a complex client issue live from the UK — proof that support never stops at Start Software. It’s also a live example of human-led, agent-operated: automation drafts, checks and routes; humans decide and sign-off. That balance is built into our product decisions so AI enhances judgement rather than replacing it.

Networking & New Perspectives (Global Clients, Real Problems)

Melika networking with an AI translation business - we service clients worldwide

Melika
spent much of the summit forging new connections — from data scientists and founders to researchers focused on AI ethics. Those conversations feed directly into our backlog: better multilingual experiences for Alpha Tracker users, clearer client communications in Alpha Legal, and faster knowledge discovery across reports. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are how we turn emerging tech into dependable features.

Digital Twins: Safer Decisions Through Simulation

We have been creating and using Digital Twin for nearly two years!

A compelling session from H&M’s AI Director showed how digital twins de-risk decisions by simulating outcomes first. We’ve been experimenting with similar ideas for nearly two years, using synthetic scenarios to test scheduling, workflow and data-quality impacts before they reach users. It’s the same philosophy behind our “start small, learn fast” approach: pilot with clear objectives, measure the outcomes, then scale into Alpha Tracker and beyond.

AI First — Thinking with AI from the Start

"AI First" - Robin wishes he had the copyright!

Across many talks, one phrase kept returning — “AI First”. For us, it means thinking with AI from the outset, not bolting it on at the end. In practice that looks like: designing data models that support explainability; building features that are auditable; and ensuring that agents work within clear human limits. Begin with purpose, start small, measure outcomes and scale thoughtfully — it’s how we ship reliable AI into production systems.

Our Products: AI in Action for Real Clients

We’re already applying conference lessons across the suite:

  • Alpha Tracker – home to features such as AlphaValidator, Ask Alfie, and FLS-powered scheduling, helping consultants produce higher-quality reports, faster.
  • Alpha Legal (and Alpha Portal & Legacy Portal)– secure digital signatures and client document portal, streamlining onboarding and compliance for will writers, estate planners and solicitors.
  • ecoScribe – AI-assisted ecological report writing that accelerates drafting while maintaining clarity and consistency.
  • roadvlog – simplifying data capture and evidence gathering for litter campaigns such as Clean Up Britain.

“Every new idea has to pass a simple test: does it help people — or just intrigue engineers?”
Dan

Reflections by the Water (and Why Context Matters)

The Norwegian Dawn drifting by

The venue, set on Amsterdam’s main waterway, offered the perfect metaphor: constant movement and connection. Between sessions, ships and ferries drifted past while we compared notes on data governance, model transparency and client workflows. Context is everything — the right feature at the right time in a user’s day beats any flashy demo. That’s the standard we bring back to our product teams.

Time to Relax (and Compete!)

Zac was seriously fast!

Even innovators need downtime. We made time to unwind with an F1 simulator — and yes, Zac held his place on the leaderboard all conference long. Healthy competition aside, these moments are where ideas settle and plans form: what do we prototype next; which client pain point do we remove first; how do we keep shipping value quickly and safely?

Team Passes & Tangible Takeaways

Most of the Start Software team were at the event

Badges collected, brains buzzing. Each pass represents a thread we’ll pull on over the coming months: more transparent AI in Alpha Tracker, streamlined client journeys in Alpha Legal, and continued investment in report automation via ecoScribe. If you’d like to see these features in action, get in touch — we love showing the “art of the possible.”

Other Themes

Women in AI was a theme, for sure, and many (most?) of the speakers and keynote presenters were female.  The whole summit opened with a powerful video about ending violence against girls - a passion-project for the Founder of Inspired Minds (the Summit organisers), Sarah Porter.

The damage that AI is doing to our planet (and minds) was another theme.  In fact, the most powerful presentation, expertly delivered, was from Karen Hao.  Karen has written a book - Empire of AI - equating the development of AI to the empires of old.  AI has concentrated power into the hands of a few individuals worldside, it relies on exploiting labour, and it is using huge amounts of the world's natural resources.  For anyone interested in history, this will be a familar story - it is basically how the British Empire came to dominate the world.

Karen Hao's "Empire of AI" book - a troubling read

The presentation was so good that Robin has bought the book for all at Start to read.

Looking Ahead

We’ll be presenting an AI session at Alpha Software Dev Day on 18 November 2025 — sharing what we’ve learned and demonstrating how to design human-in-the-loop systems using Alpha’s tools.
See Alpha Software’s events page for details. Expect practical examples you can take back to your own apps: agentic workflows with oversight, explainable outputs and patterns for responsible automation.

From Summit to Strategy

Robin, Catherine, Dan, Lucas, Mickey, Jack, Zac, Melika, James & Fatbardh

We came to Amsterdam to explore what’s next. We left convinced that the future belongs to teams who keep learning — and who build AI that stays transparent, trustworthy, and human-led. If you’re interested in how these principles can help your organisation, let’s talk about pilots, workshops and roadmaps tailored to your needs.

Human-led. Agent-operated. AI-first. Transparent.

New Water feature within Alpha Tracker - an easier way to record when actions are completed and risks are closed

You and your clients can now record when water hygiene actions are completed and risks are closed within Alpha Tracker's water sub-system.

Look for the system at the site (1), then drill down from the system (2) to the asset/outlet (3) and the relevant risk (4):

Drill down to record when actions are completed (5) and risks are closed

You can record an unlimited number of completed actions (for monthly tasks, for example) and the system is clever enough to close the risk if a one-off task has been marked as complete.

Your clients can also do the same activity in the Water Client Portal given them control over the risks and actions assigned to them.

For more information, contact Support.  This feature will be generally available as part of Release 41.6.

We've made the asbestos Client Portal significantly faster to load. Get in touch if your clients are reporting slow access

Do your larger clients find the asbestos Client Portal slow to load?  We've finished an update which makes it significantly faster to load.

The asbestos Client Portal is now much faster to load

We'll be making this improvement available as a patch for asbestos software Alpha Tracker.  Get in touch with Alpha Tracker Support (UK or Aus/NZ) to request the patch.

Alpha Tracker Release 42 plans are nearly complete. Do you want us to squeeze another feature in?

We're just about to wrap up the feature-list for asbestos & water hygiene software Alpha Tracker Release 42.  Is there anything you'd like to suggest for us to squeeze in?

Ideas-a-plenty for Release 42

We're already focusing on:

Do get in touch with Jack, our Alpha Tracker Product Manager, with your ideas and suggestions.

More software updates on the way including a new Exchange Calendar Sync and hyperlinks to photos in asbestos reports

Jack & Adam are working on some more updates to asbestos software Alpha Tracker.

Product Manager Jack and developer Adam

There is a new version of Exchange Calendar Sync which fixes a couple of bugs.  One of the fixes relates to the situation where an appointment is swapped from one member of staff to another, and then quickly moved to another date or time.  One of our asbestos consultancy clients had spotted that appointments in this situation were not always being synced correctly.

Adam has been working on a new feature for PDF asbestos reports.  He's enabling an option so we can including hyperlinks to photos in PDF reports enabling a larger, higher quality photo to be displayed if the hyperlink is clicked on by the report recipient.  This is pretty clever stuff - also helping you to make the most of Alpha Tracker's Client Portal with your clients.

If you've got any ideas for features for Alpha Tracker Release 42, get in touch!

Kim has been delivering Alpha Tracker training sessions and clinics this week. Can we help you, too?

Kim has been on the road this week, delivering advanced Alpha Tracker training to established users, and running a troubleshooting clinic for a new client.

I couldn't find a picture of Kim "in action", so this headshot will have to do!

One of the asbestos consultancy clients had asked to deliver a "gap analysis", to highlight areas of their business where Alpha Tracker could help to reduce admin and increase productivity.  One of Alpha Tracker's strengths is its flexibility, but that's also a challenge as our clients have choices about how much to implement and how to integrate it into their operations.

Kim, Catherine & Judy are all able to help you get the most out of your Alpha Tracker asbestos software.  For example:
  • are you still running a separate CRM system (or spreadsheets) alongside Alpha Tracker?

  • do you produce your quotations through Alpha Tracker or are you using another system?

  • are site staff picking up their jobs from their phone calendars, or are you still emailing rotas?

  • do you think you could make your scheduling team more productive through the use of FLS?

  • are you using our latest features aimed at making surveyors more productive?

  • are your asbestos templates perfect - or are you having to make manual amendments to documents?

  • are invoices generated automatically from Alpha Tracker or are you still raising invoices manually in your accounts software?

  • are your clients downloading their asbestos reports from your client portal, or are you still emailing PDFs (or printing and posting!).
Get in touch and have a chat.  We'd love to help you.

New feature in the Water Hygiene Client Portal - temperature and flushing records

Your clients can now record temperature and flushing records live in the Alpha Tracker Client Portal for Water Hygiene.

Another new Alpha Tracker feature

There are more Water Hygiene (Legionella) updates on the way - keep an eye on the Alpha Tracker blog for more details.  Or let us know what changes you'd like to see - we love to hear from our wonderful Alpha Tracker family!

Andrew Bedwell & Robin finalising communication plans for the Big C Atlantic Challenge

Robin spoke to Andrew yesterday to finalise his communication plans for the Big C Atlantic Challenge world record attempt.

The staff at Start Software are going to be Andrew's communication team, posting his updates on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram when he's away.  Start Software are the main sponsors for the project with their Alpha Tracker and Alpha Portal logos appearing on the boat and sail.

They will also be monitoring the Big C Tracker app (see https://bigctracker.app) which they have built to show Andrew's progress across the Atlantic!  You can see a video showing how the app was built here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QajFkuzCyds&t=24s

The weird thing was that roles were reversed because Robin was on the water when Andrew called... on his paddleboard!

Andrew in St John's, Newfoundland speaking to Robin in Shrewsbury, UK

Stop press! Andrew has called to say that he is hoping to set off this Saturday - 27 May - nearly a week ahead of schedule.  Click https://bigctracker.app/ to follow Andrew and his updates.

Andrew has been to see Hugo Vihlen's boat - the current World Record holder - and other Big C Atlantic Challenge news!

Our director Robin had a blast catching up with Andrew Bedwell today, hearing about his World Record attempt's latest news.  Robin grabbed busy Andrew for a 3-minute update from a service station on the A14...

Start Software is sponsoring Andrew in his attempt to cross the Atlantic (unsupported!) in a sailing boat that's only 1m long - yes that's 3 foot 3 inches, give or take!  Andrew's Big C Atlantic Challenge is raising money for cancer charities and he hopes to shave nearly two feet (60cm) off the existing record held by American Hugo Vihlen (read about Hugo's crossing here).

Andrew's boat will carry Start Software, Alpha Tracker and Alpha Legal/Alpha Portal branding on the side pods.  All of the Start team will be travelling up to meet Andrew and see the boat in action next month during the sea trials.

Follow Andrew's news as he nears the start of his voyage in May by liking and following his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082612007911 or subscribe and follow our blog, here https://blog.start-software.com/search/label/BigCAtlanticChallenge.

Lots of activity at the Big C Atlantic Challenge. Our Start Software pods are nearly ready

Andrew Bedwell has been busy finishing his boat for his world record attempt.  He'll be setting off to cross the Atlantic in the shortest vessel ever - it's only 3 feet long! - in just a couple of months.

We're proudly sponsoring Andrew to help him to achieve his goal and raise much-needed funds for cancer charities.  The pods on the boat will be carrying the Start Software logo along with those for our Alpha Tracker and Alpha Portal products.  The designs for the pods are nearly complete.

We're doing all we can to support the incredible Andrew Bedwell and his Big C Atlantic Challenge
