Our Director, Robin Bennett, woke up to a flurry of messages from friends and family this morning as Clean Up Britain and the AI Litter Dashcam app featured prominently on BBC News. The article and accompanying video highlight how our technology is being used to tackle the growing litter crisis on the UK's road network.

A Powerful Tool for Change
Developed and donated by Start Software, the app turns a standard smartphone into a sophisticated data-gathering tool. By using Artificial Intelligence to identify and grade litter, the app provides objective evidence of the state of our roadsides. As we recently discussed when testing the app with BBC Radio Shropshire, this data is essential for holding National Highways and local councils to account.

How the Technology Works
The app is remarkably simple for volunteers to use, requiring no downloads or registration. The software operates through a web browser, taking photos every ten seconds. The AI then grades the environment:
- Grade A: No litter present.
- Grade B: Small amounts of litter.
- Grade C: Widespread litter.
- Grade D: Heavily littered, appearing "filthy."
This automated process allows for thousands of reports to be generated weekly, as we previously highlighted when Clean Up Britain appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain.

Supporting Environmental Innovation
At Start Software, we are dedicated to using our expertise to solve complex problems. Whether it is building AI tools for the asbestos industry with Alpha Tracker UK or creating environmental monitoring apps, our goal remains the same: providing clear, actionable data.
