Learning, Connecting, Inventing: Start Software at World Summit AI 2025, Amsterdam

4,000 chairs ready to be filled (and 5,000 people actually attended!)

Learning, Connecting, Inventing: Start Software at World Summit AI 2025, Amsterdam

The Start Software team headed to Amsterdam for this year’s World Summit AI — two days of ideas, debate, and discovery. We went to learn, connect and invent, and we came back with new insights, connections, and practical takeaways to improve how our products work for real people. From agentic AI and human-in-the-loop design to transparency and security, the themes map directly onto what we build every day in Alpha Tracker, Alpha Legal, ecoScribe and roadvlog. Our goal is simple: use AI to amplify creativity and productivity while keeping people firmly in control.

Two special people joined our group. Legacy Software Manager Mickey from our partner CTT Group, and Start's remote developer Fatbardh — our first chance to meet Fatbardh in person. Trips like this deepen partnerships and help us align product roadmaps with the challenges our clients are facing right now.

Early Starts, Big Ideas: Why Human Focus Still Wins

Jack & Catherine walking into the venue

There’s something about starting early in a new city — daybreak walks through Amsterdam’s quiet streets before the day’s ideas and conversations begin. The energy built fast as we joined 4,000+ attendees focused on where AI is heading next. For us, “next” isn’t abstract: it means better data quality checks in Alpha Tracker, more secure document workflows in Alpha Legal, and AI-assisted writing that saves ecologists hours in ecoScribe. Early starts, big ideas — and a constant focus on the humans who rely on our software every day.

“It’s All About Time”: Productivity with Guardrails

The message was clear - AI should be used to amplify creavity and make the most of our time

One of the standout keynote messages was time — how AI changes the way we use it, save it, and sometimes waste it. We’re doubling down on features that give time back to users: AlphaValidator (and our newly-previewed AI tools) in Alpha Tracker catches issues before reports go out; Ask Alfie helps users find answers instantly; and FLS-powered scheduling reduces planning friction. In Alpha Legal, digital signatures and client document workflows cut days from onboarding, while ecoScribe speeds up report writing without sacrificing accuracy. Productivity matters — but only with strong guardrails for quality and compliance.

The Vibe: Agentic AI, Security and Human-in-the-Loop

Lucas, Melika & Jack at an Agentic AI booth - a theme of the event

Every booth buzzed with conversation about AI agents and safe autonomy. Our takeaway is pragmatic: agentic workflows shine when they are operator-controlled and auditable. That’s how we approach automation in Alpha Tracker — giving teams tools to triage data, draft outputs and flag anomalies while a human makes the final call. It’s also front-of-mind for Alpha Legal, where trust and traceability are essential. Agentic AI is exciting… and even better when it respects human expertise.

Teamwork and Collaboration with Partners

Start Software are an AWS partner - so we borrowed their both for the group photo!

We made time to connect with partners like AWS, exploring new AI services and how they can bolster resilience, performance and security in our stacks. Cloud choices matter when you’re processing sensitive reports or legal documents at scale; our partnership work helps keep Alpha Tracker and Alpha Legal fast and dependable. Huge thanks to Kim and Adam for support from the UK — teamwork that kept everything running smoothly while we were away.

“Seeing how others weave AI into live business systems — not just labs — pushes our thinking forward. Our challenge now is translating that into wins for our clients.”
Robin

It’s About Time… and Team Spirit

It's about time - and interesting cars!

A DeLorean time machine made the point with a wink: great tools give you time back. That’s the bar we set for our roadmap — features that shorten cycle times, reduce rework and make expertise travel further. Whether it’s smarter scheduling in Alpha Tracker, friction-free document approvals in Alpha Legal or AI-generated structure in ecoScribe, we measure success by the hours our users get back for higher-value work.

Human in the Loop: Support That Never Sleeps

Our 24x7 Support didn't stop just because we were away

Even while at the conference, real-world teamwork continued. Zac, Dan, and Jack handled a complex client issue live from the UK — proof that support never stops at Start Software. It’s also a live example of human-led, agent-operated: automation drafts, checks and routes; humans decide and sign-off. That balance is built into our product decisions so AI enhances judgement rather than replacing it.

Networking & New Perspectives (Global Clients, Real Problems)

Melika networking with an AI translation business - we service clients worldwide

Melika
spent much of the summit forging new connections — from data scientists and founders to researchers focused on AI ethics. Those conversations feed directly into our backlog: better multilingual experiences for Alpha Tracker users, clearer client communications in Alpha Legal, and faster knowledge discovery across reports. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are how we turn emerging tech into dependable features.

Digital Twins: Safer Decisions Through Simulation

We have been creating and using Digital Twin for nearly two years!

A compelling session from H&M’s AI Director showed how digital twins de-risk decisions by simulating outcomes first. We’ve been experimenting with similar ideas for nearly two years, using synthetic scenarios to test scheduling, workflow and data-quality impacts before they reach users. It’s the same philosophy behind our “start small, learn fast” approach: pilot with clear objectives, measure the outcomes, then scale into Alpha Tracker and beyond.

AI First — Thinking with AI from the Start

"AI First" - Robin wishes he had the copyright!

Across many talks, one phrase kept returning — “AI First”. For us, it means thinking with AI from the outset, not bolting it on at the end. In practice that looks like: designing data models that support explainability; building features that are auditable; and ensuring that agents work within clear human limits. Begin with purpose, start small, measure outcomes and scale thoughtfully — it’s how we ship reliable AI into production systems.

Our Products: AI in Action for Real Clients

We’re already applying conference lessons across the suite:

  • Alpha Tracker – home to features such as AlphaValidator, Ask Alfie, and FLS-powered scheduling, helping consultants produce higher-quality reports, faster.
  • Alpha Legal (and Alpha Portal & Legacy Portal)– secure digital signatures and client document portal, streamlining onboarding and compliance for will writers, estate planners and solicitors.
  • ecoScribe – AI-assisted ecological report writing that accelerates drafting while maintaining clarity and consistency.
  • roadvlog – simplifying data capture and evidence gathering for litter campaigns such as Clean Up Britain.

“Every new idea has to pass a simple test: does it help people — or just intrigue engineers?”
Dan

Reflections by the Water (and Why Context Matters)

The Norwegian Dawn drifting by

The venue, set on Amsterdam’s main waterway, offered the perfect metaphor: constant movement and connection. Between sessions, ships and ferries drifted past while we compared notes on data governance, model transparency and client workflows. Context is everything — the right feature at the right time in a user’s day beats any flashy demo. That’s the standard we bring back to our product teams.

Time to Relax (and Compete!)

Zac was seriously fast!

Even innovators need downtime. We made time to unwind with an F1 simulator — and yes, Zac held his place on the leaderboard all conference long. Healthy competition aside, these moments are where ideas settle and plans form: what do we prototype next; which client pain point do we remove first; how do we keep shipping value quickly and safely?

Team Passes & Tangible Takeaways

Most of the Start Software team were at the event

Badges collected, brains buzzing. Each pass represents a thread we’ll pull on over the coming months: more transparent AI in Alpha Tracker, streamlined client journeys in Alpha Legal, and continued investment in report automation via ecoScribe. If you’d like to see these features in action, get in touch — we love showing the “art of the possible.”

Other Themes

Women in AI was a theme, for sure, and many (most?) of the speakers and keynote presenters were female.  The whole summit opened with a powerful video about ending violence against girls - a passion-project for the Founder of Inspired Minds (the Summit organisers), Sarah Porter.

The damage that AI is doing to our planet (and minds) was another theme.  In fact, the most powerful presentation, expertly delivered, was from Karen Hao.  Karen has written a book - Empire of AI - equating the development of AI to the empires of old.  AI has concentrated power into the hands of a few individuals worldside, it relies on exploiting labour, and it is using huge amounts of the world's natural resources.  For anyone interested in history, this will be a familar story - it is basically how the British Empire came to dominate the world.

Karen Hao's "Empire of AI" book - a troubling read

The presentation was so good that Robin has bought the book for all at Start to read.

Another Successful ISO Audit for Start Software. Thanks Catherine & Kieran (and James & Zac for giving evidence to the auditor)

We’re delighted to share that Start SoftwareStart Technology (Software) Ltd - has once again passed our ISO9001 (Quality Management) and ISO27001 (Information Security) surveillance audit — with flying colours!

The audit was managed expertly by Catherine, with valuable support from our ISO consultant Kieran. Our auditor, Chris, carried out the full-day assessment remotely (screenshot proof below!) and confirmed that we continue to meet the high standards expected for both certifications.

Robin, looking confused (as usual), Kieran pulling a face, Catherine & Chris

At Start Software, our ISO certifications aren’t just certificates on the wall (or our websites, see here and here) — they’re part of how we run the business every day. Maintaining rigorous quality and information security processes helps us to:

  • continuously improve the software and services we provide to our customers (such as Alpha Tracker)

  • ensure our systems and data remain safe and secure

  • deliver consistent, reliable results that our clients can depend on.

A huge well done to the whole team, and especially to Catherine for steering us smoothly through another successful audit.

Our commitment to quality, security and customer service remains at the heart of everything we do — and this latest audit result shows that dedication in action.

Welcoming Serenna – our latest work experience student at Start Software!

We’ve really enjoyed having Serenna with us at our Telford office this week!

Serenna is an Open University student studying Software Development, and she joined us for a week of work experience to get a feel for what life is like in a busy software company.

During her time with the Start Software team, Serenna got involved in all sorts of activities — from spending time on our support desk, sitting in on developer meetings, and even speaking directly with clients. She quickly got to grips with how we support our users and keep our systems running smoothly… and she even took a few support calls herself (and did brilliantly!).

Throughout the week, Melika was Serenna’s mentor, helping her settle in and guiding her through the different areas of our work — from coding to customer support.

Serenna and Melika, helping a client

Serenna, Melika & Development Team Leader Dan

Serenna and Support Desk lead Zac

It’s always great to see the next generation of software developers gaining real-world experience, and we hope her time with us has been both useful and inspiring.

Thanks for joining us, Serenna — and best of luck with the rest of your studies!

Support Desk Performance – September 2025

Our Support Desk had another strong month in September, with excellent results across the board.

  • Total tickets solved: 879

  • Tickets solved on time: 828 (94.2%)

  • High-priority tickets solved on time: 182 (98.4%)

How does this compare?

Looking at the last few months, September continues the upward trend of strong performance. Both standard and high-priority requests were dealt with on time at higher rates than earlier in the summer. In fact, high-priority tickets have now been consistently resolved on time at 97% or better for five months in a row.

Why this matters

When you contact our Support Desk, you want issues resolved quickly and reliably. These results show that our team continues to hit that standard – especially when it comes to urgent, business-critical problems.

The bigger picture

Across the last six months, we’ve:

  • Solved 4,381 tickets

  • Resolved 4,024 on time (that’s over 91%)

  • Maintained high-priority on-time performance above 95%

That consistency is something we’re really proud of.

Software update available - faster invoice generation with *custom* invoice templates

Jack's development team has just completed a software update within Alpha Tracker which will benefit asbestos and water consultancy clients using custom invoice templates*.

Make your accounts staff smile! Faster invoice generation in Alpha Tracker

The change made enables invoices to be generated (behind the scenes) using our high-performance Cloud Document Maker service, meaning that invoices can be generated more quickly and more reliably.

If you would like this update, contact Support to discuss how we can patch your system.

* Alpha Tracker clients can pick from a number of built-in invoice templates which are professional and well-designed.  In addition, clients can design their own templates to reflect the fonts, colours and logos in use throughout their business.  This is another example of Alpha Tracker's flexibility and customisation

Decked Out with celebs at the Southampton Boat Show: Robin visits to see Andrew Bedwell show Big C V2 to the Boat Show visitors

Saturday was a special day down on the south coast – Robin headed to the Southampton Boat Show to catch up with our friend Andrew Bedwell, the man behind the incredible Big C Atlantic Challenge.

Andrew Bedwell and the amazing Big C V2 - the shortest boat to cross the Atlantic

You’ll remember from our earlier posts how Andrew is preparing to take on the Atlantic in Big C – the world’s smallest yacht designed to make the crossing, all in aid of raising funds for Cancer Research. At the show, Andrew was proudly displaying the boat - covered in our Start Software sponsor logo - to tens of thousands of visitors, and it was brilliant to see so many people inspired (and amazed!) by his story. Andrew’s second attempt to cross the Atlantic in Big C is set for May 2026, and momentum is really building.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we also rubbed shoulders with a couple of famous faces:

  • Captain Jason Chambers – yes, the Captain Jason from Bravo’s Below Deck Down Under. We couldn’t resist grabbing a quick selfie with Jason and Andrew together (see below!).

    Robin, Andrew & Capt Jason
  • Nick Ogden, founder of WorldPay, and inventor of e-commerce(!!) - generously gave Robin and Andrew a personal tour of his astonishing high-speed vessel, Thunder Child II. Let’s just say it’s the kind of boat that makes jaws drop and hearts race.

Andrew with Nick in Thunder Child II

All in all, it was a fantastic day – catching up with Andrew, sharing the story of Big C with new audiences, and meeting some unexpected celebrities along the way. The countdown to Andrew’s record-breaking Atlantic crossing continues, and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.

Pedalling for a purpose – Dan & Robin at Goodwood! The Goodwood 500 was a blast. £1000s raised for MND sufferers in the West Midlands thanks to the Matt Gallagher Foundation

Last weekend, two of our own – Dan and Robin – joined forces with colleagues from our partner company CTT Group to form the Peloton Pioneers at the Goodwood 500 Charity Cycle. The venue: the legendary Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The CTT Teams in all their tight-shirt glory!

🚴 Dan’s Big Milestone

Dan completed his very first 100-mile ride – a huge achievement that shows what determination (and a bit of team encouragement) can do.

Dan in action on his way to 100 miles in 6 hours

🚴 Robin’s Metric Century & Photography Duties

Robin rode a “metric 100” (100 km) before swapping pedals for a camera, capturing shots of the team in action – including plenty of evidence of tired legs and determined faces.

Robin (unfortunate yellow helmet!), Bob, Sian, Laura, Connor and more of the riders

Why We Rode

The event raised money for the Matt Gallagher Foundation, set up after Matt’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2023. The foundation provides practical help to those affected by MND in the Midlands – from home adaptations to “bucket list” experiences, giving families comfort and memories when they need them most.

The incredible, determined, inspirational Matt Gallagher starting the event

Thank You

A big thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us already – it made a real difference on the day. But we’re not done yet! If you’d like to help, every pound goes directly to the Foundation’s work.

The legs are recovering (slowly), the photos are in, and the fundraising continues. Thanks again for being part of it.

AI in Alpha Tracker - our Premium & Enterprise clients enjoyed an early look at the AI innovations we're developing

A big thank you to all of our Premium and Enterprise Alpha Tracker clients who joined CTO Jack and MD Robin yesterday for our private AI webinar. We were delighted to see so many of you online, eager to understand where AI is taking Alpha Tracker — and our industry.

Robin ready to present - including his ZX81 & ChatGPT supermarket mag!

AI can sometimes feel like the latest in a long line of “next big things” in technology. Robin still remembers working with punched cards*, ZX81s, BBC Micros and Amstrad word processors… then PCs, spreadsheets, Windows, the birth of the Internet, mobile phones, smartphones and more recently WhatsApp, IoT and broadband. Each of those felt transformational in its time. But AI is bigger than all of them. What’s changed in the last five years has been nothing short of extraordinary.

That’s why we’re not waiting on the sidelines. AI is already embedded in Alpha Tracker today, with features that many of you are already using. AlphaValidator is helping check and improve report quality, FLS is scheduling more effectively, Ask Alfie is answering support queries, and screen summaries are making it easier to navigate information quickly. These aren’t “future ideas” — they’re working, live, and already saving our users time and effort every day.

Behind the scenes, we’re busy working on even more AI-driven capabilities. Without giving too much away (our competitors read this blog too 👋), we shared a glimpse of what’s “in build”: smarter tools to analyse photos and reports, new ways to check quality and consistency, and even features that will make communicating results quicker and easier. All of these are being designed with one aim in mind — to help you deliver faster, more accurate, and more insightful services to your clients.

We also touched on the bigger picture: how agent-based AI could become part of everyday business life, what that means for asbestos professionals, and the opportunities (and challenges) that lie ahead. One thing is certain — AI will reshape our industry, and we want Alpha Tracker users to be at the front of that wave.

And we’re putting our money where our mouth is. Next month we’re taking the entire Start Software team to Amsterdam for the World Summit AI. It’s the global event for AI, and we’ll be learning from the very best so that we can bring the latest thinking straight back into Alpha Tracker.

World Summit AI in Amsterdam - we're taking the whole team

So once again, thank you to all who attended. Your feedback, your questions, and your ideas are helping guide our AI journey. We’ll keep innovating, keep building, and keep listening — because our goal is simple: to make Alpha Tracker the smartest and most powerful platform in the industry.

* not Robin, actually, but he worked alongside people who did!

Alpha Tracker at the NORAC Conference in Manchester

Yesterday, Kim and Melika from Alpha Tracker had a busy and successful day at the NORAC Asbestos Conference in Manchester. They spent time at our our conference stand and in the main room, reconnecting with familiar faces and forging strong new connections across the asbestos consultancy and health & safety sectors.

Old friends! (less of the "old", Neil said!)

Melika looks tiny!

We showcased the latest updates in Alpha Tracker asbestos software, sharing how our platform continues helping consultancies streamline survey records, compliance, and incident management.

Old clients dropped by the stand—always great to catch up, hear feedback, and discuss how asbestos software Alpha Tracker is working for them in real-world settings.

New leads and contacts also stopped by, interested in how we manage regulatory compliance, reporting, and how our mobile/web platform supports field work.

Let's have an asbestos debate!

The conference had an excellent agenda. One of the standout sessions was the debate about whether UKAS accreditation should be mandatory (or not) in the asbestos surveying industry.

In addition, these stood out:

These talks tied in nicely with Alpha Tracker’s focus on standards, compliance and user safety—so there was a lot of synergy and topics for deeper discussion at the stand.

Kim at our Alpha Tracker stand

NORAC’s 2025 Annual Conference is one of the key events in the asbestos sector calendar. With its location at Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel, it attracted consultants, analysts, contractors, safety professionals, and regulatory experts. The event also included NORAC’s first-ever Asbestos Awards Ceremony, recognising excellence across the community.

Kim with global asbestos leader Yvonne Waterman

We came away inspired. The insights from speakers like Nick Baxter and Louise Wainwright reinforced how ever-more important robust software solutions are—especially in areas like accreditation, protection, and regulatory standards.

If you missed us at NORAC but want to learn more about what Alpha Tracker can do for your asbestos compliance or surveying work:

If you’re interested, we can also send you the full NORAC programme link or PDF so you can see all the talks and plan ahead for next year.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the stand, attended the talks, or joined in the conversations. Looking forward to applying what we learned and seeing some of the new ideas brought to life!

Can you support Dan & Robin cycling for Motor Neurone Disease?

Dan & Robin are cycling a charity event on Sunday 21 September at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.  The event - the Goodwood 500 - is in aid of people suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND).  500 cyclists are aiming to cycle 100 miles (40 laps!) to raise funds for the Matt Gallagher Foundation.

Matt Gallagher was a professional rugby player diagnosed with MND in 2023. Matt is a friend of Start Software director Andrew - and Andrew encouraged Robin & Dan to ride along with him and other friends and colleagues.

Robin & Dan

Look - bikes!

If you'd like to support Dan & Robin and can donate something - however small - to support people with Motor Neurone Disease, here is the link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/exdcb-goodwood-500-matt-gallagher-foundation-charity-cycle.

Thanks in advance!

We've increased the speed and flexibility of our Data Exports within Alpha Tracker. Another demonstration of our belief that the data in Alpha Tracker is *your* data, not ours

You know how passionately we believe that the data within Alpha Tracker is *your* data and we are the custodians of it.  Unlike many other asbestos software providers who delight in locking you in to their systems and hold you to ransom if you want access to it, we work hard to expose as any ways as possible for you to export your data and link to other software systems.

CTO Jack and the software team have updated our Data Export engine to increase the speed that exports run and to increase their flexibility, especially around the export of PDF files (such as asbestos reports).

Exports are now faster and more flexible

You can find details about all of our data exports and integrations on our websites here https://alpha-tracker.co.uk/integrations (UK) and https://alpha-tracker.com.au/integrations (Australia/New Zealand).

Our best showing in the Coracle World Championships! Lucas, Jamie, Jack & Dan reach the semi-final

Our Start Software Coracle-racing team had their best showing yet on Friday, reaching the semi-final.  Their run was ended by Jamie digging deep with the oar - far too deep, in hindsight! - and sinking our boat.  Despite his best efforts and those of the team members following him, it was "game over" but there were smiles all round.

You can still donate to Macmillan if you'd like to: https://macmillan-org.enthuse.com/pf/start-software-out-of-ctrl-c.  Thanks in advance!

The Coracles lined up and ready

A great turnout yet again - what a way to fundraiser for Macmillan

Our latest software project has been soft-launched at the Dairy Show. SOLID Diet Management is nearly production-ready

We've been working with the famous Nicholson farming family over the last few months to build a new farming app - SOLID Diet Management (see https://blog.start-software.com/2025/05/were-building-new-farming-app-meeting.html).

Built using the Alpha Software development platform (Alpha Anywhere), our team have built an innovative and robust self-service app.

Dan & Lucas attended the soft-launch at the Dairy Show

The Dairy Show was the ideal venue for the soft-launch of the app (not least because it was in Telford!), so Dan & Lucas went along to meet the farming brains behind the product, Richard Nicholson, and watch him introduce it to fellow farmers.

The Big C (V2!) is back in the water! Andrew's preparations for his next World Record attempt are going well

Adventurer and friend of Start Software Andrew Bedwell has been video-calling us from his new boat, Big C V2!

Andrew with Big C V2 at Whitehaven, UK

Andrew has rebuilt Big C from scratch using a new design, new materials and a new approach to weight distribution.  It is still tiny - but there is (slightly) more room inside for his navigational aids and for food.

His sea trials at the weekend were a great success and the boat only needs a few minor adjustments in time for his journey to start in May 2026.

We're supporting Andrew right up to the point where he sets off - to break the World Record for the shortest boat to cross the Atlantic (Big C is only 1m long...) he has to be completely unsupported.  That means 3 months at sea eating only the food he can take with him (or catch) and drinking water made by hand-cranking a desalination unit.
