Asbestos training plummets during Coronavirus pandemic

This is worrying.  The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has announced that the level of asbestos training in the construction industry has dropped to a 5-year low.

Prior to the Coronavirus crisis, an average of 18,000 workers a month completed asbestos training. Over the last six months (March-August), an average of 6,000 workers a month undertook asbestos training delivered by UKATA-approved training providers, a fall of more than 66%.

As a reminder, more than 5,000 people a year die in the UK from asbestos-related diseases and the number continues to rise.

As a company, we do everything we can to promote the awareness of asbestos and the importance of safe management and working practices alongside sound asbestos software (eg Alpha Tracker).  We hope that this drop in the level of training proves to be a "blip" and that it returns to normal throughout the rest of 2020.

Tourist's flock to Australia's "asbestos Chernobyl"

Following on from our blog post signposting the BBC short film about Wittenoome, we just found this fascinating piece:

Alpha Tracker reaches another milestone - software version 4500

Our market-leading asbestos software, Alpha Tracker, has reached another milestone.

We've just made our 4,500th change to the system - really! - adding another new feature requested by our users.

We work on Alpha Tracker daily and each set of changes made (to add features, fix bugs or improve performance) increases the "version number" of the system.  We're now at version 4500, which is pretty incredible given that we only launched Alpha Tracker a few years ago as a major ground-up rewrite of our original asbestos software, Tracker.

Every few months we make a "release" available to our users which batches up a group of changes into an update which clients can then deploy to their system.

The next release will be Release 33.  This follows on the heels of:

A moving reminder of the dangers of asbestos - EDP share Lindsay Wall's mesothelioma story

Our asbestos software Alpha Tracker client EDP has shared the moving and tragic story of Lindsay Wall, an Australian tradesman who lost his life to the asbestos-related disease, mesothelioma.

Since we created Tracker, almost 20 years ago, our asbestos software systems have helped to identify millions (literally) of asbestos-containing materials in buildings across the world. We support the charity Mesothelioma UK in their work to help sufferers of this terrible lung disease. We'll continue to do what we can to highlight the dangers of asbestos in the workplace and provide software solutions for asbestos consultancies to use so that asbestos can be identified and effectively managed.

Another sign that the asbestos industry is returning to (a new) normal

In another sign that the asbestos surveying industry is returning to near-normal (or a "new normal"), one of our biggest Tracker asbestos software customers, Environmental Essentials, has announced that they are returning to office working.

Good luck EE! As we posted on Wednesday, it looks like activity in the asbestos industry is returning to pre-lockdown levels (see https://blog.start-software.com/2020/07/support-desk-performance-for-june-2020.html) and Environmental Essentials' move is another confirmation of this.

Tomorrow is Action Mesothelioma Day #AMD20

Action Mesothelioma Day is held annually on the first Friday of July.  This year, it is being held tomorrow (3 July 2020) with hashtag #AMD20.  Hundreds of people up and down the UK will be joining (virtually, in most cases) to raise awareness and share their stories about Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

As a company, we support Mesothelioma UK and the work they do.  We have been working in the asbestos industry creating and supplying asbestos software Tracker and Alpha Tracker for nearly 20 years and many staff have personal links to people affected by asbestos-related diseases.

If you would like to support the event yourself, click this link to download a poster for your workplace https://www.ukata.org.uk/documents/293/AMD_Poster_2020_1.pdf

COVID-19 is changing the way we all work

Here at Start Software we have been driving the use of technology in the field of environmental consultancy since we introduced handheld surveying nearly 20 years ago.  Our original Tracker Mobile app (which was part of Tracker) enabled users of the earliest "pocket PCs" to survey sites for asbestos without taking any paper with them - a genuine revolution in the UK asbestos industry.

COVID-19 and the crisis surrounding the virus is pushing technology further and further into everyday business activities. Meetings by video are now the norm in many, if not most, businesses.  Staff expect to be able to work from home with similar productivity and access to systems as if they were in the office.

We've picked up on this article which relates specifically to the use of technology in the construction industry - it's well worth a read if you work with asbestos or other environmental issues:

More Alpha Tracker report template questions answered!

We've had lots of follow-up questions from asbestos consultants following this blog https://blog.start-software.com/2020/05/report-templates-within-alpha-tracker.html.  In that post we talked about how report templates work in asbestos software Alpha Tracker and how we make use of Word and Excel to automatically create reports which are exactly like your hand-written ones... clients will not tell the difference!

Here are some of the best of the questions sent in - keep them coming!

Q: What type of report change can I do myself, and which do you (Start Software) need to do?

A: Our report templates are Word documents in the main (some are Excel) and so, in theory, any change can made by anyone able to use Word.  In practice, cosmetic changes are very easy to do but changes affecting the structure of the report may be best done by the Start Software support desk. For example, if you want to include a new type of exec summary or a new chart showing a colour-coded view of the asbestos found on site - these changes would be best made by us.

Q: You said in the video that most changes are done for free - is that right?

A: Yes, the Alpha Tracker support contracts and Tracker Mobile subscriptions pay for your 24x7 personal support including report changes if they are straightforward and relate to the templates we originally set up for you.  If the report changes are difficult or relate to brand new templates, we may quote you for the time needed.

Q: Can signatures be included on reports?  At the moment my surveyors are physically signing printed copies of reports and then scanning them back in

A: Yes! Alpha Tracker has a feature whereby you can store a surveyor's signature in the system and then automatically include it on reports without her/him ever having to sign a physical document again!  Naturally, the signatures only appear on final reports, not drafts

Q: Why does Alpha Tracker use a document queue to produce reports?  Why not produce them instantly?

A: Virtually all of our asbestos consultant clients hold hard-earned accreditations and have a controlled process to generate a draft report, have it checked, then issue as an authorised final document to clients.  The queue enables that process to happen in a controlled way as well as enabling consultancies with 100s of surveyors to manage their workload.  For smaller consultancies only producing one or two reports at a time, the queue is normally empty anyway - so the reports are generally produced "instantly" anyway

Q: We've been told by your competitors that report changes take weeks to complete - is that fair?

A: NO! We pride ourselves on our ability to turn around work in the timescales that work for our clients.  We don't always manage to do this, of course, we're not perfect and nor is any business! However, our ability to work "around the clock" via our staff in Australia and Indonesia mean that we have taken instructions at 5pm in the UK and have had new report templates produced by 9am the following morning!

Are virtual asbestos courses the post-Coronavirus future?

Our asbestos software Tracker user Environmental Essentials has passed the BOHS approval process to deliver virtual courses - congratulations Environmental Essentials! See their post here.

Business contingency plans are "business as usual" for us at Start Software

Here at Start Software we have been ISO9001 certified for well over a decade now and a fundamental part of our certification is demonstrating that we have a well-tested business continuity plan in case one or more of our offices or data centres become unavailable.

With the global worries about the CoVID 19 coronavirus and increasing numbers of countries taking action to reduce the movement of people, please be reassured that we have processes in place to ensure that our support, development and asbestos software services will all continue to run even if staff cannot come into the office, for whatever reason.

If you would like more information, please contact director Elaine Porter via 0333 301 1010 or our contact page.

FAQ: Do I need an Internet connection to use Tracker Mobile and collect asbestos data on site?

No!

Asbestos surveyors do not need WiFi or a mobile data connection when collecting data and photos on site
It's something we get asked a lot - asbestos surveyors worry that if they don't have an Internet connection they won't be able to do their asbestos surveyors or asbestos reinspections.  This isn't the case!

Our Tracker Mobile asbestos site data collection product does not need an Internet connection when it is being used - it works perfectly "offline".  The surveyor only needs to connect to the Internet when sending their data in (or picking up new jobs from the office administrators using Alpha Tracker).

One of our competitors loves spreading rumours to the contrary - don't believe what you hear!  Asbestos surveyors around the world have collected more than 30,000,000 items of asbestos data using Tracker Mobile and 95% of this has been collected offline...

Podcast with Neil & Ian from Acorn - all about asbestos software

Have a listen to this podcast if you get chance... Acorn's Neil & Ian interviewing me about asbestos software.  A chance to chat about Alpha Tracker, Tracker and even SAM 100... chewing the cud and talking about my 20 years in the asbestos software industry.

Neil & Ian from Acorn visit to record their asbestos podcast

Great to see Acorn directors Neil Munro and Ian Stone this morning.  They visited our Telford office to record their latest "The Asbestos Knowledge Empire" asbestos podcast.

Robin, Neil and a fluffy microphone - not Ian!!!
We chewed the cud over a whole range of asbestos software topics - starting with a bit of history about Tracker and Alpha Tracker, then talking about new developments and ending up with thoughts at the end about why any of us are involved in the asbestos industry.  I'm not sure anyone expects to find a career in asbestos!!!

Ian & Neil are two asbestos industry figures really leading the way with new media and engaging directly with their clients.  Top blokes too - a really enjoyable way to spend the morning.

Regular readers of the blog will know that I have been personally touched by the devastating effects of Mesothelioma, see https://robinbennett.blogspot.com/2018/01/mcp-and-start-software-helping.html.

We've been producing software for the asbestos industry (asbestos consultancies, surveyors and building/estate managers) for 20 years now and each year the expectation has been that the "asbestos problem" will reduce in size.  Articles like this confirm that the problem is actually getting worse, in many respects, and the need to manage asbestos in situ is more important than ever.

If we can help your organisation to manage asbestos, do get in touch.  Our Tracker family of asbestos systems (including the web-based Alpha Tracker asbestos software) has helped hundreds of organisations with their asbestos problem and it contains the world's largest database of surveyed asbestos items.

Neil & Robin meet after 20 years of business partnership and 30,000,000 items of asbestos data captured

Meet Neil Bartholomaeus.  Neil has been a business partner of ours for 20 years and is the brains and energy behind Mobile Data Studio, a key part of Start Software's Tracker and Alpha Tracker asbestos software systems.

Neil and Robin finally meet - after 20 years of business partnership
Neil lives and works near Perth, Western Australia, and had the vision to see the market for mobile site data collection systems even before reliable handheld devices existed! His experience working for the government in the most senior health & safety roles gave him an insight into the value of collecting data electronically and replacing paper with electronic forms.  The result of this vision, working with software developer Mike Stokes, is the software that we use to create our Tracker Mobile asbestos data collection system which has now captured 30,000,000+ items of asbestos data from buildings worldwide.

Having been business partners across the globe for 20 years now, we have finally got to meet!  I am working out of Perth this week with Judy from our Australian Alpha Tracker office, so Neil & I arranged to meet to discuss strategy and the next round of software improvements.

Cheers Neil for 20 years of partnership, helping us to help asbestos consultancies to identify and remove asbestos from buildings around the world.

Another asbestos consultancy chooses Alpha Tracker - welcome LAANZ!

It's lovely to end the year with another Alpha Tracker asbestos software order.

This time it is Auckland (New Zealand) based asbestos consultancy LAANZ who has researched the market and has chosen to have Alpha Tracker as their asbestos management software.

LAANZ are WorkSafe New Zealand licensed asbestos assessors having proven their abilities with industry qualifications and many years of experience in the industry.  Specifically, LAANZ work in these areas of asbestos management:

  • Issuing clearance certificates
  • Management surveys
  • Refurbishment surveys
  • Demolition surveys
  • Air monitoring
  • Management plans
  • Asbestos awareness courses
  • Asbestos Removal Guidance
Improving the efficiency of surveying for asbestos is at the heart of Alpha Tracker:
  1. Before the survey, you can log calls and other contacts, generate quotes and plan work
  2. When the asbestos surveyor is on site, they will have access to the Tracker Mobile data collection app enabling data, plans and photos to be captured on smartphone and tablet
  3. Back in the asbestos lab, the results are recorded and auto-entered into the survey report
  4. The asbestos report is generated with one-click!  It is produced in your format, too, not ours
  5. The report is then viewable and shareable via the built-in Alpha Tracker Client Portal
  6. To wrap up the job, you can generate an invoice automatically and post to Sage, Xero or other accounts packages.

Welcome LAANZ to the Alpha Tracker asbestos software family!

Christmas & New Year arrangements at Start Software

Where did 2018 go?!?  It has flown by for us and I'm sure it's the same for you. Hope you've had a good year and have an even better 2019.

Anyway... our support desk is open 24x7 to support you and your business throughout the festive period although our Telford and Adelaide offices will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day as usual.

Our chosen asbestos charity for 2018 - Mesothelioma UK
We'll be sending a donation to Mesothelioma UK instead of buying Christmas cards.  Given our connection with the asbestos industry (via Tracker and Alpha Tracker) we hope you agree with our decision to help charities supporting individuals and families affected by this devastating asbestos-related illness.
