We’ve just completed Alpha Tracker training with the BAS team at their offices in Bridgend, and it was great to spend time with such a friendly, knowledgeable and hands-on team.

Bridgend Asbestos Services provide specialist asbestos services across South Wales and the surrounding areas, including asbestos surveys, asbestos sampling, air monitoring, four-stage clearance testing, asbestos management and asbestos removal support.

Like many asbestos consultancies, BAS have a lot to keep track of: jobs, sites, surveys, samples, reports, documents, certificates, appointments and customer communications.

That’s exactly where Alpha Tracker asbestos software comes in.

During the training session, we worked through how the BAS team can use Alpha Tracker to help manage their asbestos work more efficiently, from the office through to site-based activity. It was particularly nice to see the team trying things out on phones and tablets straight away, which is always the best way to bring the system to life.

Help us shape Tracker Agent: what should it do for you?

We are rewriting one of Alpha Tracker’s most popular tools, Tracker Filer, and we would love your input.

Talk to us! You have a chance to shape Tracker Agent

Many Alpha Tracker users already rely on Tracker Filer to help link emails and attachments to the correct Alpha Tracker document folders. By copying emails to a special Tracker Filer email address, the system can read the content of the email and file the email and attachments into the appropriate job or quote folder.

It can also help with tasks such as scheduling appointments into your diary.

But Tracker Filer was created before the current generation of AI tools, and there is now an opportunity to make it much more powerful.

Introducing Tracker Agent

Tracker Filer is being completely rewritten as an AI-powered agent that can work on your behalf.

The new tool, Tracker Agent, is already in development. The aim is to allow everyday Alpha Tracker tasks to be triggered directly from an email, saving time and reducing manual admin.

We are currently working on features that allow Tracker Agent to:

  • file documents for you, just like Tracker Filer
  • automatically add Purchase Order numbers to quotes when you forward an email containing the PO
  • mark quotes as won and create the project or job for you
  • close one or more projects or jobs
  • add an appointment for a job into a surveyor’s diary, either on a specific date/time or in the first free slot

All of this can happen straight from an email. You simply send or forward the email to Tracker Agent, and it can take the appropriate action for you.

We think this could become a major timesaver for Alpha Tracker users.

Built with safeguards in mind

Of course, any AI-powered automation needs to be handled carefully.

As part of the development work, we are thinking carefully about permissions, audit trails and sensible safeguards, so that Tracker Agent only does the things it should be allowed to do.

The goal is not just to make Alpha Tracker more automated, but to make it more useful, more controlled and more accountable.

What the latest FAMANZ newsletter tells us about asbestos management in the UK

The latest FAMANZ newsletter may be written for asbestos professionals in Australia and New Zealand, but many of the themes will feel very familiar to UK asbestos consultancies, laboratories, contractors and duty holders using asbestos software Alpha Tracker.

Across the newsletter, there is a clear focus on competency, practical guidance, consistent survey standards, public-sector asbestos assurance, training, laboratory reporting and the challenge of moving from simply holding asbestos information to proving that asbestos is being properly managed.

There is also a useful international comparison for UK readers. FAMANZ highlights the UK HSE’s decision not to lower Great Britain’s asbestos control limit, while noting that the European Union is moving towards a lower occupational exposure limit. The HSE’s position, as reported by FAMANZ, is that competency, training, supervision, site controls and enforcement may have more impact than changing the numerical limit alone.

That is an important point for Alpha Tracker customers in the UK. Asbestos compliance is not just about numbers in a report or documents sitting in a folder. It is about having reliable systems, clear processes, competent people, current registers, well-managed actions and evidence that risks are being controlled in practice.

The latest FAMANZ newsletter is well worth a read for asbestos professionals across Australia and New Zealand. It highlights just how active the sector is right now, with important work continuing around competency, training, asbestos survey standards, public-sector assurance, laboratory reporting, and the practical implementation of new and updated guidance.

From an asbestos software Alpha Tracker perspective, the themes are very familiar. Asbestos management is becoming more demanding, not less. Clients, regulators and building owners increasingly expect clearer evidence, better records, stronger governance and more consistent processes.

FAMANZ reports continuing progress on its Competency Framework for Asbestos Professionals, the Safe Work Australia Asbestos Framework Review, the updated WorkSafe New Zealand Good Practice Guidelines, and preparations for the 2027 ASBESTOS Conference in Christchurch (Judy and some of the team from the UK will be there, of course!). There is also continued focus on asbestos in consumer products, including children’s play sand, and on the need for better supply-chain assurance and public protection.

For Alpha Tracker customers, this all reinforces the importance of having robust asbestos systems in place. Whether you are managing surveys, samples, registers, removals, reinspection programmes, client portals or reporting, good software helps turn professional practice into repeatable, auditable processes.

We will continue to follow these developments closely and support our Australian and New Zealand customers as expectations around asbestos management, competency and reporting continue to evolve.

Today, we had the pleasure of training the A55 Asbestos team on how to use asbestos software Alpha Tracker in their fantastic asbestos laboratory. It was great to spend time with the team, see their setup, and help them get started with the system.

Support Desk Performance: June 2026

June was another strong month for the our Support Desk, with the team solving 953 tickets and maintaining a high level of responsiveness across the board.

Overall, 94.44% of tickets were solved in time, our best result so far this year. High-priority tickets also performed very well, with 98.33% solved in time.

That means that, despite June being one of the busiest months of 2026 so far, the team continued to deliver a reliable and responsive service for asbestos software Alpha Tracker, Greenfield, ecoScribe and other Start Software system users.

June saw a noticeable increase in ticket volumes compared with May, rising from 803 tickets solved in May to 953 in June. Even with this increase, our in-time performance improved slightly, which is a real credit to the Support Desk team.

Looking beyond the numbers

Support performance is not only about how quickly we respond. It is also about understanding why issues happen in the first place.

During July, we are focusing heavily on root cause analysis. This means looking more closely at repeat problems, recurring support themes, and areas of the software where customers are seeing the same kinds of issues more than once.

The aim is simple: to reduce avoidable tickets and give our customers a smoother, more reliable software experience.

Where we identify repeat issues, we will be working with the wider development team to improve processes, update guidance, enhance training material, and, where needed, make changes to the software itself.

Release 42 is now live

We have also recently completed and deployed Release 42 of Alpha Tracker.

This release includes a wide range of improvements and should help reduce ticket volumes over time, particularly in areas linked to performance. We know that software speed and responsiveness have a direct impact on day-to-day user experience, so this has been an important focus for the team.

As more customers move onto Release 42, we expect to see fewer performance-related support requests and a better overall experience for users.

Alpha Tracker Mobile update in the app stores - improved data safeguards

We spotted a gap in our data safeguards within Alpha Tracker Mobile this week.  We take data security incredibly seriously, and have a number of measures in place on the app to protect data if a phone has a fault whilst a water hygiene technician is working.  When we reviewed the code after a customer query, we spotted that we had a gap that we could plug.


The new Alpha Tracker Mobile has been released to the app stores and will auto-update onto technican handsets this week.

These two well-established and successful UK asbestos consultancies are coming to us for different reasons.  One is thinking of switching from our main competitor, fed up with their attitude to support and their generally unhelpful stance on making data available to them.  The other has been wrestling with an internal software development for years and is checking out the market to see what's available off-the-shelf.  Here at Alpha Tracker, we pride ourselves on our support and our attitude to openness and integrations.

Alpha Tracker x ASBpro: Real-Time Asbestos ID in the Palm of Your Hand

If you’ve been in the asbestos game for more than five minutes, you know the routine. You’re out on a site, maybe it's a derelict factory, a busy hospital wing, or a site where someone’s "accidentally" tipped a load of suspicious-looking debris. You spot something. You take a sample. You bag it, tag it, and then... you wait.

You wait for the courier. You wait for the lab. You wait for the results to be typed up. By the time you actually know what you’re dealing with, the project might have stalled, the client is breathing down your neck, and you’ve spent half your life refreshing your inbox.

Well, we’ve been working on something behind the scenes that’s going to change that. Actually, it’s going to do more than change it, it’s going to flip the script entirely.

We are absolutely chuffed to announce a brand-new integration between Alpha Tracker and the ASBpro handheld asbestos analyser from the clever folks at PAS Scientific.

Imagine being able to identify asbestos in seconds, right there on the spot, and having that data flow straight into your Alpha Tracker system before you’ve even left the site. No, it’s not science fiction. It’s here, it’s brilliant, and it’s going to make your life a whole lot easier.

What is this "Magic Wand" anyway?

Let’s talk about the hardware first, because the ASBpro is a bit of a marvel.

It’s a handheld device that uses something called NIR (Near Infra-Red) spectroscopy. Now, don’t let the long words put you off, in simple terms, it shines a specific type of light at a material and looks at how that light bounces back. Because every material (including the different types of asbestos) has a unique "fingerprint" in the infrared spectrum, the device can tell you exactly what you’re looking at.

The best bit? It’s tiny. It weighs about 150g, literally the weight of a smartphone, and fits in the palm of your hand. It’s not some clunky piece of kit that requires a trolley and a degree in nuclear physics to operate. You point it, you scan it, and in about ten seconds, you’ve got an answer.

It detects all the usual suspects: Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite, and the rest. It even takes photos and tags them to the result. It’s essentially a lab in your pocket, minus the white coat and the smell of chemicals.

Now, a fancy gadget is great, but if the data just sits on the device, it’s only half the battle. This is where we come in.

We’ve built a direct integration between the ASBpro and Alpha Tracker. When you take a reading with the ASBpro, that data, including the identification result, the spectral data, and the photos, doesn’t just stay on the handheld. It flows directly into your Alpha Tracker system.

Alpha Tracker support performance update for May 2026

We have updated our monthly support performance figures for May 2026 and, once again, the Alpha Tracker support team has delivered a strong month for our clients.

May was a good month on the Support Desk

During May, we solved 804 support requests, with 758 completed within our target response times. That means 94.28% of all support requests were resolved in time.

For higher priority support requests, the results were even stronger. We solved 171 high-priority requests within target, giving us an in-time performance of 96.07% for those more urgent cases.

Six months of consistent support performance

Looking across the last six months, from December 2025 to May 2026, the team has now resolved 5,184 support requests.

Of these:

  • 4,816 were completed within target

  • 936 high-priority requests were completed within target

  • The overall in-time performance has remained consistently above 91% every month

  • High-priority in-time performance has remained above 96% every month

That consistency matters. Support performance is not just about having one good month. It is about being reliable month after month, especially when clients are relying on Alpha Tracker to help manage asbestos, legionella, fire, water hygiene and other compliance work.

May in context

May was another busy month, with more than 800 support requests solved. The overall in-time figure of 94.28% was the best result of the last six months, which is particularly pleasing.

It was also good to see high-priority support remain strong at 96.07%, even with a higher number of urgent requests than in April.

As always, we are grateful to our clients for the clear information they provide when raising support requests. Good detail at the start helps us investigate faster, respond more accurately and keep things moving.

Start Software's apps for Clean Up Britain appear on ITV's Good Morning Britain

We developed four apps for anti-litter campaign group Clean Up Britain and they have really taken off.

Founder John Read was on Good Morning Britain this morning (he's a regular!) to talk about the litter problem in the UK, and so we briefed him on the amount of data the apps have now collected for the campaign.

For example, each week our apps collect more than 1,000 reports from road users reporting litter on the roadside.  Mount your phone so the camera is pointing at the verge, and our automated AI-powered "litter dashcam" app takes photos every few seconds and uses AI to grade the litter and log it to our database.  The information gathered is used to feed back to councils & National Highways and informs the national policy discussion.

Welcome Keith to the Support Desk!

We have a new member of staff on our Support Desk - welcome Keith!

Keith has extensive experience of supporting software users and has mainly worked in large organisations such as HRMC.  Working in our smaller team will be a change of pace and approach - and hopefully won't be too "taxing" (see what I did there...).

Alpha Tracker asbestos software users have already been talking to Keith as he starts his training - and they have already benefited from his server and technical expertise.  We'll really pleased to have Keith board - do say hello when you next call.

Significant performance improvements are being seen with Alpha Tracker Release 42 beta

We are pleased to say that the beta version of Alpha Tracker Release 42 is already looking very encouraging.

A small number of clients have been trying the new release, and the early signs are positive. In particular, some clients are seeing their Apdex score improve by around 3 to 5 points.

That may sound like a small number, but in day-to-day use it can make a noticeable difference. It means Alpha Tracker is feeling quicker, smoother and more responsive for users, especially when carrying out regular tasks across the system.

There is still more testing to do before the full release, but these early results are a promising sign. We will continue to monitor performance closely during the beta period and fine-tune things where needed.

Robin's week in Newfoundland is over - Big C is now ready and waiting only for the right winds and tide

They say a watched kettle never boils.  At the end of Robin's week working and helping Andrew Bedwell prepare his tiny boat "Big C v2" to cross the Atlantic, it was starting to feel like a watched boat would never sail, either!  The wind never behaved and so the week was spent preparing the boat and testing equipment, not watching Andrew head off east.

The first logistical challenge was to find Big C.  The logistics company knew that the boat was in Newfoundland, but not exactly where and so it took half the week to get the boat (still in its packing crate) to the quayside at Petty Harbour.  The boat then had to be uncrated, and hauled upright so that Andrew could continue to fit and test equipment inside.

Only a week to go - Andrew & Robin meet to check his satellite phone and Big C Atlantic Challenge app

With only a week to go before his world record-attempting Atlantic crossing, it is all feeling very real for adventurer Andrew Bedwell.  He's planning to set off from St John's, Newfoundland to sail across the ocean back to the UK in a tiny boat, completely unsupported.  That's 90+ days of being alone in something not much bigger than a wheelie bin (see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3w3jgqj0nno).

April 2026 Support Desk Performance: A Busy Month Supporting Alpha Tracker Users

April was another strong month for the Start Software support desk, with the team continuing to deliver a fast and reliable service for customers using Alpha Tracker.



It was also a particularly busy month for calls from asbestos and water hygiene technicians, reflecting the continued day-to-day reliance on Alpha Tracker in the field. Whether technicians were logging site information, updating records, managing jobs, or needing help while out with clients, the support desk was on hand to help keep work moving.

Strong response and resolution performance

In April 2026, the support desk solved 869 problems in total. Of those, 810 were solved in time, giving an overall in-time resolution rate of 93.21%.

High-priority support remained especially strong. The team solved 141 high-priority issues in time, achieving an excellent 97.92% in-time rate for high-priority tickets.

This continues the consistent performance seen throughout the year so far:

A busy month for technician support

April’s figures show that the support team handled a substantial number of requests while maintaining a high standard of service. With Alpha Tracker being used heavily by asbestos and water hygiene technicians, many calls required practical, timely support for people working in live operational environments.

That kind of support is especially important when technicians are on site and need quick answers. The April results show the team continuing to respond effectively, helping users resolve issues and get back to their work with minimal delay.

Solving 869 problems in April, while keeping more than 93% of all tickets and almost 98% of high-priority tickets within target, is a strong achievement and a great reflection of the team’s commitment to Alpha Tracker customers.

Debugging the Streets

One of our company values is that we join in and contribute to our communities. This week we did exactly that - a group of volunteers from the Start Software Telford HQ stepped away from their desks and into the community, taking part in a litter picking initiative aimed at making a visible difference to the local area.

Things didn’t go entirely to plan!! Partway through the journey, the weather turned and hail started coming down. Still, the team persevered and got stuck in.

By the end, a noticeable amount of waste had been cleared and the area left in much better shape. Not unlike their day jobs, really. Whether it’s cleaning up data or cleaning up streets, the aim is the same: leave things tidier and improve the environment for everyone.

In a single session, the team cleared three full bags of waste, a shopping trolley, and a roadside fly-tipping deposit. Well done all.

We've just finished an Alpha Tracker asbestos implementation for one of the UK's largest companies.

Our client has literally thousands of sites nationwide, ranging from small units to huge office complexes.  Our asbestos software is now deployed in the Alpha Tracker cloud, and is managing the asbestos across the entire estate. 

It's been a challenging implementation, but today we went live, on time, and on budget.  Well done Jack & Dan - great job.
