Alpha Tracker x ASBpro: Real-Time Asbestos ID in the Palm of Your Hand

If you’ve been in the asbestos game for more than five minutes, you know the routine. You’re out on a site, maybe it's a derelict factory, a busy hospital wing, or a site where someone’s "accidentally" tipped a load of suspicious-looking debris. You spot something. You take a sample. You bag it, tag it, and then... you wait.

You wait for the courier. You wait for the lab. You wait for the results to be typed up. By the time you actually know what you’re dealing with, the project might have stalled, the client is breathing down your neck, and you’ve spent half your life refreshing your inbox.

Well, we’ve been working on something behind the scenes that’s going to change that. Actually, it’s going to do more than change it, it’s going to flip the script entirely.

We are absolutely chuffed to announce a brand-new integration between Alpha Tracker and the ASBpro handheld asbestos analyser from the clever folks at PAS Scientific.

Imagine being able to identify asbestos in seconds, right there on the spot, and having that data flow straight into your Alpha Tracker system before you’ve even left the site. No, it’s not science fiction. It’s here, it’s brilliant, and it’s going to make your life a whole lot easier.

What is this "Magic Wand" anyway?

Let’s talk about the hardware first, because the ASBpro is a bit of a marvel.

It’s a handheld device that uses something called NIR (Near Infra-Red) spectroscopy. Now, don’t let the long words put you off, in simple terms, it shines a specific type of light at a material and looks at how that light bounces back. Because every material (including the different types of asbestos) has a unique "fingerprint" in the infrared spectrum, the device can tell you exactly what you’re looking at.

The best bit? It’s tiny. It weighs about 150g, literally the weight of a smartphone, and fits in the palm of your hand. It’s not some clunky piece of kit that requires a trolley and a degree in nuclear physics to operate. You point it, you scan it, and in about ten seconds, you’ve got an answer.

It detects all the usual suspects: Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite, and the rest. It even takes photos and tags them to the result. It’s essentially a lab in your pocket, minus the white coat and the smell of chemicals.

The Alpha Tracker Connection: Where the Magic Happens

Now, a fancy gadget is great, but if the data just sits on the device, it’s only half the battle. This is where we come in.

We’ve built a direct integration between the ASBpro and Alpha Tracker. When you take a reading with the ASBpro, that data, including the identification result, the spectral data, and the photos, doesn’t just stay on the handheld. It flows directly into your Alpha Tracker system.

If you’re using Tracker Mobile for your surveys, this is a game-changer. You’re already capturing your site data, floor plans, and notes on your tablet. Now, your asbestos screening results can be part of that same digital workflow.

Funnily enough, we often talk about "joining the dots" in environmental compliance, and this is exactly what we’ve done here. We’ve connected the physical world (the material on site) to the digital world (your compliance records) in real-time.

Why Should You Care? (The "Real World" Benefits)

I know what you’re thinking: "Robin, this sounds lovely, but is it actually going to save me money?"

The answer is a resounding yes. Let’s look at a few scenarios where this integration shines:

1. Rapid Screening in Waste Management

Imagine a waste transfer station where a skip-load of "mixed construction waste" arrives. It looks suspicious. In the old days, you’d have to quarantine the whole lot and wait days for a lab result. With the ASBpro and Alpha Tracker, you can screen that load in seconds. If it’s hot, you know immediately. If it’s clear, you can get it processed. That’s a massive saving in time and storage costs.

2. Emergency Response & Disaster Recovery

We’ve seen it happen, fires, floods, or structural collapses where you need to know now if the dust and debris contain asbestos. Emergency services and clean-up crews can’t wait three days for a courier. This tech allows for instant decision-making on the ground, keeping people safe when it matters most.

3. Construction & Demolition Pre-checks

Before the hammers start swinging, a quick scan with the ASBpro can provide an extra layer of safety. It doesn’t replace the full asbestos survey, but it’s a brilliant "sanity check" for contractors to ensure they aren't about to disturb something nasty.

4. Reducing Lab Lead Times

By screening on-site, you can be much more strategic about what you send to the lab. You can prioritise the "maybes" and get the "definites" logged into Alpha Tracker instantly. It streamlines the whole lab sample exchange process.

Let’s Keep Us Honest: The Lab vs. The Field

Now, I need to be clear here, and I’ll keep us honest, this isn’t about replacing UKAS-accredited laboratories.

In the UK and many other regions, the gold standard for legal identification remains polarized light microscopy (PLM) in a controlled lab environment. The ASBpro is an incredibly powerful screening tool. It’s there to give you instant insight, to help you manage risk, and to speed up your workflows.

Think of it like a GP using a quick diagnostic test before sending you for a full hospital scan. It gives you the "what’s what" immediately so you can take action, while the formal paperwork follows through the usual channels.

When you combine the speed of the ASBpro with the robustness of Alpha Tracker’s reporting and compliance modules, you’re getting the best of both worlds: lightning-fast field data and rock-solid, auditable records.

How Do I Get It?

We’re already rolling this out and the feedback has been, well, brilliant. If you’re an existing Alpha Tracker user and you’re interested in adding the ASBpro to your toolkit, give us a shout.

Our support team and sales guys can walk you through how the integration works, how to get the devices set up, and how to make sure the data is landing exactly where you need it in your system.

And if you’re new to Alpha Tracker: firstly, where have you been?: now is a great time to see how our scheduling and mobile apps can transform your consultancy.

Final Thoughts

We’ve always said that Alpha Tracker is "powered by the cloud," but it’s also powered by the needs of our users. You told us you needed faster results and better field tech, so we went out and found the best hardware partners to make it happen.

The ASBpro integration is just another step in our roadmap to keep Alpha Tracker at the very cutting edge of the industry.

So, if you fancy seeing a demo of the "magic wand" in action, or if you want to know how to connect your current kit, get in touch. We’re always up for a chat (and usually a biscuit, if you’re offering).

Keep safe out there, and let’s keep making the asbestos industry a little bit faster, a little bit safer, and a whole lot smarter.

Key Technical Specs of the ASBpro:

  • Weight: 150g (Fits in your pocket!)
  • Tech: NIR Spectroscopy (no radioactive sources)
  • Result Time: <10 seconds
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth/Wi-Fi for Alpha Tracker sync
  • Detection: All 6 regulated asbestos types

Out on site with Acorn Asbestos – troubleshooting and improving Tracker Mobile face-to-face

There’s nothing quite like getting out from behind a desk and onto site.

Last week, Zac from our Alpha Tracker Support team did exactly that—joining the asbestos surveyors from our partners at Acorn Asbestos for a day in the field. The goal? To see first-hand how surveys are carried out, how our software performs in real-world conditions, and—most importantly—where we can make things even better.  We've had some repeat tickets from an asbestos surveyor and wanted to see the issue live - supporting our wonderful customers is *so* much easier in person.

Why site visits matter

We spend a lot of time building and refining Alpha Tracker and Tracker Mobile but the real test is always on site.

Asbestos surveying isn’t done in ideal conditions. It’s tight spaces, awkward access, poor signal, and the constant need to work quickly and accurately. That’s exactly why Tracker Mobile has been designed to work offline, capture detailed data, and sync reliably later.

But no matter how much experience we have, there’s no substitute for standing alongside surveyors and watching the process unfold.

A day in the life of a surveyor

Zac spent the day following Acorn’s team as they carried out a live asbestos survey.

From logging into site, reviewing previous records, and planning the inspection route, through to capturing samples, photos and notes—it was a full walkthrough of the survey lifecycle.

Nice tats, Zac!

In the photo above, you can see Tracker Mobile in action—being used on-site to capture survey data in real time. This is exactly how the system is designed to be used: simple, structured, and reliable, even in less-than-ideal environments.

Tracker Mobile plays a central role here. Surveyors are using it to:

  • Record asbestos samples and suspected materials

  • Capture photos and link them directly to items

  • Log “no access” areas and site observations

  • Work through structured forms designed around their workflow

All of this is done on a phone or tablet, often with no signal, and synced back to the main system later.

If you’re new to Tracker Mobile, you can read more about how it supports asbestos surveying on our website:

The small details that make a big difference

One of the most valuable parts of the visit was spotting the little things.

Not big feature requests—but small, practical improvements:

  • Reducing the number of taps needed for common tasks

  • Making key fields easier to access on-site

  • Improving visibility of important information in bright or awkward environments

  • Streamlining workflows when moving quickly between rooms or areas

These are the kinds of refinements that only come from real-world use. And they matter—because when you’re on site, every second counts.

This kind of continuous improvement is something we’ve talked about before—particularly in how user feedback shapes development.

Working with great partners

It was also a great opportunity to spend time with the team at Acorn Asbestos.

Their experience, professionalism, and willingness to share honest feedback are exactly what make partnerships like this so valuable. Open conversations about what works (and what doesn’t) help us continuously improve.

At Alpha Tracker, we’ve always built our software in collaboration with the industry—and days like this are a perfect example of that in action.

Feeding back into Tracker Mobile

Tracker Mobile is already widely used across the asbestos surveying industry and has been refined over years of real-world use.

But we never stand still.

The insights from Zac’s visit are already feeding into discussions with the development team—helping shape future updates and improvements. Whether it’s performance tweaks, usability enhancements, or new features, it all starts with understanding what happens on site.

Final thoughts

A big thank you to Acorn Asbestos for having us along.

Getting out on site, asking questions, and seeing the reality of asbestos surveying is invaluable. It keeps us grounded, focused, and motivated to keep improving.

And for Zac… not a bad day at the office.

All MDS (Tracker Mobile) Android glitches are now resolved - thanks for your patience

We've had a few irritating issues with MDS (Tracker Mobile) over the last few days, relating to Android updates affecting handsets.  In particular, you might have seen:

Watch Judy show how to use our new "previous locations" and "previous samples" dropdowns in Tracker Mobile

Our asbestos data collection app Tracker Mobile can now show the surveyor all locations at a site that have already been surveyed, along with all previously-taken samples.  We posted a blog here about this long-anticipated new feature.

The surveyor can use this information as a time-saver and memory-aid - even pulling through useful information to a new room or cross-referenced sample.

Watch this introduction from Judy to see how to make the most of the new feature which available to all asbestos consultancies using Alpha Tracker.  You can watch the video, above, or click here: https://youtu.be/SanTmA6tnHE

View previously taken samples! A new drop-down is available in Tracker Mobile

Another update to Tracker Mobile is available.  This is another really useful and important update, following on the heels of the "search" update we blogged about here.

An overdue update! View previously taken samples (and rooms) while surveying

We can now add drop-downs to Tracker Mobile forms to show previously used samples for information (or for use in cross-references/visually similar asbestos samples) and previously recorded rooms, too.

This was possible before, of course, but only by saving the form the surveyor was working in and returning to the list of samples already taken - now it can be seen whilst the surveyor is recording the new item.  Much easier, much faster, and much more likely to ensure quality data is recorded!

If you would like the update, please contact our UK or Aus/NZ support desks and they will be able to update your Alpha Tracker system.

Type it, search it, sorted! Have you updated Tracker Mobile yet?

Have you updated your Mobile Data app yet from the Google or Apple or Microsoft stores?  It really makes a difference when using our on-site asbestos data capture tool, Tracker Mobile.

If not, you're missing out on the amazing new search feature - it searches everything you've surveyed, and instantly too!

You can now instantly search within Tracker Mobile

Look out for more improvements coming soon - they are going to really improve your surveying day!

Element asbestos staff have their Alpha Tracker surveying training

Kim was at asbestos consultancy Element in Stockport yesterday to deliver some Alpha Tracker asbestos surveyor training.

Here are some of the photos she took during the session.  It was great to see so many old friends again!

If we can help your asbestos consultancy to get the most out of asbestos software Alpha Tracker, get in touch!

It's what we've all been waiting for! Not a party invitation from Boris Johnson, a search button in Tracker Mobile!

This is a game-changer for all of our Alpha Tracker asbestos surveyors working with Tracker Mobile, our mobile asbestos data collection system.

We finally have a search button!  This is an instant search that enables a surveyor to find rooms, items, projects, anything!

Type it, search it, sorted!

This will be of most use to asbestos surveyors doing reinspections on multiple domestic properties during a single day.  Previously, surveyors sorted the lists by project number or site name to find the items they needed, but the search option changes all of this.  It will also be a huge timesaver when searching for previously surveyed rooms or location a specific sample number.

The update will be in the Google and Apple app stores shortly.  Watch out for it!

Tracker Mobile (Mobile Data) is now compatible with Microsoft InTune

Several of our biggest clients have been asking us to make Tracker Mobile, our on-site asbestos data collection app, compatible with Microsoft's handset security software, Microsoft InTune.

Microsoft InTune is part of Microsoft's corporate security software, EndPoint Manager

We're really pleased to be able to tell you that this has now been done.  The Mobile Data app, which powers Tracker Mobile, is now available in the Google Play Store which means it is now compatible with Microsoft InTune.

This means that councils, housing associations, utility companies and our larger asbestos consultancy clients will all be able to install Tracker Mobile on InTune-managed devices as part of their Alpha Tracker setup.

We're excited! 360-degree virtual rooms coming to Alpha Tracker, Tracker Mobile & the Client Portal

360-degree cameras are seriously cool.  We're using them to give all of our Alpha Tracker asbestos surveying users access to cost-effective virtual room technology.

Try it for yourself!  Click to view the interactive 360-degree room view of one of our meeting spaces in our Telford office.  We took this photo, and annotated it, with Tracker Mobile.

You can see it in action in the video, below.  By the way, when you spin the room in Alpha Tracker it is buttery smooth... the blog makes it look jerky, but that's just an after-effect of the blog video processor.

Asbestos surveyors will be able to capture 360-degree views of rooms while surveying and send the photos in via Tracker Mobile.  Surveyors or back-office staff will be able to "hotspot" the photos so that client portal users will be able to walk through the rooms and see virtual asbestos sample labels before clicking to see more details.  Very cool indeed.

We're keeping costs down by using off-the-shelf cameras such as the Insta360 One X.

One of the excellent Insta360 cameras

Need date & time stamps on your asbestos survey report photos? Or photos taken during air monitoring work?

The new asbestos air monitoring regulations (HSG248) state that analysts need to "timestamp" any photos they have taken.

In addition, some of our asbestos consultancy clients using Alpha Tracker prefer photos in asbestos reports to be timestamped too.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution whether your staff are using Android or Apple (iOS) devices.

Try "Timestamp Camera Free" - for Android here, or "Timestamp Camera" for Apple (iOS) here.

Both apps review really well and work seamlessly with our Tracker Mobile asbestos data capture software.

It's easy to timestamp your asbestos photos

Need help or not sure how to set this up for you or your asbestos site staff?  Get in touch (UK/Aus or NZ).

Important MDS update (for Tracker Mobile) - MDS 10 is now available
